Smith Tosses No-Hitter as Patriots Split with First-Place Caldwell on Sophomore Day

MARTINSVILLE, VA — Sophomore Aris Smith (King George, Va.) delivered one of the top performances of the season on Saturday, throwing a no-hitter to lead Patrick & Henry Community College softball to a 2-0 win over Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in Game One of a Region 10 Division III doubleheader at Martin Field. The Patriots would split the day with the first-place Cobras after falling 1-0 in eight innings in the nightcap.

Before first pitch, P&HCC honored its sophomore class during the program's Sophomore Day celebration.

Smith was dominant in the circle in the opener, striking out 12 batters over seven shutout innings and not allowing a hit. Caldwell reached base via five walks, but Smith worked out of trouble throughout the game to complete the no-hitter.

The Patriots scored the game's only runs in the first inning after applying pressure early and forcing a Caldwell error.

Sophomore Brooklynn Hicks (Covington, Va.), sophomore Hannah Haynes (Virginia Beach, Va.), Smith, sophomore Laura Brown (Verona, Va.), and sophomore Kylie Cooper (Wirtz, Va.) each recorded a hit in the victory.

Caldwell starter Cheek took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing just two unearned runs on five hits over six innings while striking out five and walking one.

Game Two was another pitcher's duel and remained scoreless until the eighth inning.

Sophomore Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.) was outstanding in the circle for P&HCC, going all eight innings while allowing just three hits and one unearned run with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Despite outhitting Caldwell 6-3, the Patriots were unable to capitalize offensively. Haynes and freshman McKenzie Cobb (Yanceyville, N.C.) each recorded two hits in the loss.

Caldwell broke through in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Cheek, which proved to be the difference.

Head Coach Robbi Campbell praised the team's effort against one of the top teams in the region.

"I'm proud of how we competed all day," Campbell said. "Aris was exceptional in Game One, and Lily matched that effort in Game Two. We played hard and showed we can compete with anyone in this conference."

P&HCC moved to 26-15 overall and 1-3 in Region 10 Division III play with the split.
