Patriots Adjust Plans, Sweep Doubleheader in Georgia
STATESBORO, GA — After weather forced the cancellation of a scheduled trip to New York, Patrick & Henry Community College softball adjusted on the fly and made the most of the opportunity, traveling south to pick up two wins Sunday over Georgia Southern University East Georgia by scores of 12-3 and 4-2.
With the sweep, the Patriots improve to 19-12 overall on the season.
The Patriots showed resilience and flexibility, turning a disrupted schedule into a productive day on the field.
P&HCC fell behind early in the opener before quickly responding with a big offensive surge. Trailing after the first inning, the Patriots answered with a four-run second inning fueled by a two-run double from freshman Allison Brooks (Stuarts Draft, Va.), an RBI single from sophomore Hannah Haynes (Virginia Beach, Va.), and an RBI groundout from sophomore Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.).
The offense continued to build momentum from there. Sophomore Kylie Cooper (Wirtz, Va.) launched a solo home run in the third inning, while freshman Brooklynn Hicks (Covington, Va.) added an RBI single. In the fourth, Cooper delivered again with an RBI single before sophomore Morgan McCrary (Bassett, Va.) capped the inning with a two-run home run to extend the lead.
Cooper led the Patriots at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Brooks, McCrary, and Cooper each drove in two runs. P&HCC also remained aggressive on the bases, swiping five stolen bases, including two from McCrary.
Freshman Sierra Custer (Grottoes, Va.) got the start in the circle, allowing three runs over three innings, while sophomore Aris Smith (King George, Va.) was dominant in relief, tossing two hitless innings with five strikeouts to secure the 12-3 victory.
In Game Two, the Patriots relied on pitching and timely hitting to complete the sweep.
Sophomore Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.) delivered another standout performance, striking out 12 batters while allowing just three hits and two runs across seven innings.
P&HCC got on the board in the third inning when freshman McKenzie Cobb (Yanceyville, N.C.) singled to drive in a run. The bottom of the lineup proved key throughout the game, with Hicks, Cobb, and sophomore Haley Goode (Moneta, Va.) combining for five of the team's eight hits, scoring three runs and driving in two.
Freshman Brooklynn Hicks (Covington, Va.) led the Patriots with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate, while sophomore Hannah Frink (Vinton, Va.) and Cobb each recorded RBI.
Head Coach Robbi Campbell credited the team's adaptability and approach.
"I'm really proud of how our team handled a last-minute change in plans," Campbell said. "We didn't let the weather or travel adjustments affect our focus. We came ready to compete, had quality at-bats, and got strong performances in the circle. It's a great example of this group's resilience."
P&HCC will remain on the road as the Patriots travel to face Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 31 with first pitches scheduled for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
