Patriots Come Up Short in JUCO Showdown Finale
PANAMA CITY BEACH, FL — Patrick & Henry Community College softball closed out play at the JUCO Showdown on Saturday, dropping a pair of competitive games against NJCAA Division I opponents Shelton State Community College and John A. Logan College.
Game 1 – Shelton State 5, Patrick & Henry 4
Patrick & Henry came up just short in the opener, falling 5–4 to NJCAA Division I Shelton State despite outhitting the Buccaneers 9–8.
The Patriots struck first in the second inning when sophomore Morgan McCrary (Bassett, Va.) tripled to drive in two runs. Shelton State responded with a pair of runs in the third to even the score.
Patrick & Henry regained the lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by sophomore Kylie Cooper (Wirtz, Va.), making it 3–2. Shelton State tied the game again in the fifth before pulling ahead with a two-run double in the eighth.
Sophomore Lily Carola (Union, W.Va.) got the start in the circle for the Patriots, allowing five hits and three runs (all unearned) over 4.1 innings. McCrary finished with two RBIs from the seven spot in the lineup, while sophomore Hannah Haynes (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Cooper each collected two hits. Patrick & Henry also stole three bases in the contest.
Game 2 – John A. Logan 7, Patrick & Henry 3
The Patriots opened the nightcap strong but could not hold off NJCAA Division I John A. Logan, falling 7–3.
Patrick & Henry jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with back-to-back home runs, highlighted by a solo shot to right field from freshman McKenzie Cobb (Yanceyville, N.C.).
John A. Logan tied the game in the fourth inning and took control with a four-run fifth to secure the win.
Sophomore Aris Smith (King George, Va.) started in the circle for the Patriots, striking out six over 3.2 innings. At the plate, Haynes led Patrick & Henry with two RBIs and went a perfect 2-for-2. Haynes and Cooper each finished with two hits in the game.
Patrick & Henry concludes play at the JUCO Showdown and now turns its attention to the next stretch of the schedule.
Patrick & Henry will be back on the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 14, traveling to Roane State Community College for a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
