Patriots Fall to Guilford Tech in Midweek Region 10 Matchup
MARTINSVILLE, VA -– Patrick & Henry Community College baseball ran into a tough offensive showing from Guilford Technical Community College on Wednesday afternoon, falling 16-2 in Region 10 Division II West action at Hooker Field.
The Titans struck first in the opening inning when Brock Welch drove in a run, but the Patriots answered quickly in the bottom half. Redshirt freshman Hunter DePriest (RS-Fr., Alleghany, Va.) delivered an RBI single down the left field line on an 0-2 count to plate the tying run and make it 1-1.
Guilford Tech regained momentum in the second inning with four runs and continued to add on throughout the afternoon. Freshman Brayden Winters delivered a two-run double in the frame, while Elijah Grant added an RBI triple and Ashton Fernandez followed with an RBI double.
The Titans tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by Brock Welch before a five-run sixth inning put the game out of reach. Ashton Fernandez doubled in two runs in the inning, sophomore Bryce Meachem added an RBI double, and Trey Costner launched a two-run home run to center.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Torres (RS-Fr., Cape Coral, Fla.) got the start on the mound for the Patriots, working three innings and striking out two.
Patrick & Henry was limited to four hits in the contest, with Bryson Redmond (So., Bluefield, W.Va.), DePriest, Jessen Copeland (Fr., Waxhaw, N.C.), and Evan Androvett (So., Dallas, Texas) each collecting one. Redmond and DePriest accounted for the Patriots' two RBIs.
Despite the result, Patrick & Henry remained solid defensively and committed no errors in the field.
Guilford Tech finished with 20 hits in the contest, led by Winters with four hits, while Fernandez, Meachem, and Welch each drove in three runs.
The loss drops Patrick & Henry to 17-20 overall and 15-16 in Region 10 Division II West play.
The Patriots will look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to face Southwest Virginia Community College in a Region 10 road series.
